Buddhist teachers train in Sarasota

From Herald Tribune - More than 40 Buddhist meditation teachers from throughout the state gathered here for training this month.

The Teaching Skills Retreat, which aimed to improve the qualifications of Kadampa teachers, was Feb. 8 to Feb. 10 at the Kadampa Meditation Center Florida, 2016 N. Lockwood Ridge Road in Sarasota.

During the weekend, the teachers gave presentations, guided meditations and discussed the core principles of teaching Buddhist meditation classes, according to guidelines described by the contemporary Buddhist scholar, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. The course was led by Kadam Lucy James, resident teacher of KMC Florida, who has been practicing and teaching Kadampa Buddhism Gyatso’s guidance for 26 years.

KMC Florida is the regional center for the New Kadampa Tradition, which now has more than 20 Buddhist Meditation Centers and groups throughout Florida. All the centers offer meditation classes that are open to the public.

At the end of this year, a traditional Kadampa Buddhist temple will be built at the Sarasota site. For more information about the center, call 373-1600 or visit the Web site at www.meditationinsarasota.org.
